WFP Action on Climate Change

Climate change has a direct and major impact on food security in Nepal, both in terms of access to and availability of food, and in its utilisation and stability. The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is committed to supporting climate change adaptation in Nepal, in line with the Government’s National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA). Through its Food and/or Cash-For-Asset (F/CFA) programme, WFP supports the immediate needs of families while assisting communities to improve their livelihood and resilience through the construction of assets and training activities that improve crop production, enhance incomes and/or protect arable land in climatically vulnerable areas. Current climate related F/CFA projects include: small scale irrigation canals, farmer field schools, and post-harvest storage facilities to enhance and protect agricultural production; enhanced terracing to reduce erosion; riverbank construction to reduce the risk of flooding; sustainable income generation projects such as apple and walnut orchards and medicinal and aromatic plant nurseries. WFP also implements the Nepal Food Security Monitoring System (NeKSAP), which collects, analyzes and presents information on household food security, emerging crises, markets and nutrition from across Nepal. Leveraging its unique and comprehensive monitoring capacity, WFP has initiated the process to incorporate climate change monitoring into its existing food security monitoring system. In addition, WFP’s headquarters in Kathmandu is leading the way in clean energy use. The office currently operates almost exclusively on solar power for the majority of the day, reducing its carbon footprint and ensuring that work is conducted in a sustainable way.
